Dear Wildcat Family,
Welcome to Wayland Union Middle School! Our state of the art building houses approximately 450 students grades 7th & 8th. We remain committed to the fact that the middle school years are a transitional period for students, parents, and families. The Staff at WUMS understands the impact these years have on both academic and personal growth. We are committed to addressing these individual needs in order to enhance their educational experiences during adolescence.
Through the 7th-12th grade and staff 1:1 iPad initiative, our staff members utilize technology in order to enhance learning activities and provide our students with innovative educational experiences. Students are challenged and inspired daily in a number of venues which include academics, athletics, or extra-curricular activities. It is our hope that these students will enter high school and college with the skills they will need to become successful professionals and contribute to our community.
Wayland Union Middle School has been identified as a Focus School by the Michigan Department of Education. A Focus school is one that has a large achievement gap in 30% of its student achievement scores.
Our staff will continue to implement reading comprehension strategies, inquiry based activities, and innovative learning experiences in order to improve our students’ achievement levels. We will use researched based reading programs like REWARDS, Read Naturally, and strategies such as guided highlighted reading to increase our students’ reading fluency and comprehension levels. Our social studies and science teachers will use their professional development through the Van Andel Education Institute and Oakland County to create inquiry based lessons that will train our students to use analytical skills and persistence when they approach a problem. Lastly, we will continue to use our 1:1 iPad initiative to engage our students in their own learning.
We appreciate the continued support of parents, staff and our community in lifelong learning process.
Carolyn E. Whyte, Principal Wayland Union Middle School
